What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a completely safe form of treatment, as well as being a very relaxing and pleasant experience.

The purpose of a course of treatment is to normalize the body's functioning, to help to break down tension and alleviate stress, and to improve nerve functioning and blood supply throughout the body.

Reflexology relieves many of the troublesome complaints as painful backs and tension headaches

If, for example, you are experiencing an unsettled period in your life, one that is creating tension and anxiety within you, reflexology could give you the support you need in order to cope with your circumstances in a more positive frame of mind.

Reflexology sessions are primarily intended to improve the body's circulation and to assist the body in speeding up the elimination of waste products, so that toxins do not have a chance to build up to harmful levels in the liver, kidneys, or bowel. As well, reflexology can help to control the perception of pain by stimulating the release of endorphins-the body's natural painkillers-from the pituitary gland in the brain into the bloodstream.

But reflexology works best when it is used to treat the whole body, rather than specific conditions. In this way, it improves all of the body's functions, and this, in turn, encourages the natural healing process to work that more speedily and efficiently.

The Origins of reflexology:

From evidence that we have, reflexology is known to be more than 4000 years old. Paintings discovered in the Physician's Tomb at Saqqara, Egypt, dating back to about 2300 DC, show an actual reflexology treatment in progress.

The Chinese are also known to have used reflexology in conjunction with acupuncture. Dr Wang-Wei, a Chinese doctor in the 4th century BC, evidently used to position acupuncture needles in his patients' bodies and the apply very firm pressure with his thumbs to the soles of their feet. This pressure was maintained for several minutes until the desired therapeutic effects were achieved. Dr Wang-Wei maintained that as the pressure was applied and maintained, healing energy was released in the patients' bodies.
Reflexology and the West

Reflexology as we know it in the West has its origins in the study of zone therapy, which utilizes the longitudinal lines of energy running up through the body from the feet to the brain.
